On the way to brunch Mr. Perfect and I were counting the incredible number of garage sales we passed. Lawn chairs, dressers and even velvet paintings of Elvis were available, in record numbers, for a steal. Last year we had a couple sales ourselves and made countless trips to donate…well…crap, which had accumulated in our garage or been left behind by others. Mr. Perfect works really hard during the week and isn’t a big fan of collecting coins in exchange for “stuff” during the weekend. Can’t really blame him, because having a garage sale can be a tremendous amount of work for very little profit…or…it can be a great way to make some extra money and clean out your house of unused items. It just depends how much you know and preplan before the sale begins. Here are some tips to have a profitable garage sale that is truly worth your time.

ADVERTISE THE GOODS: When placing an advertisement in the newspaper make sure it has different ad copy for each day. Instead of your ad saying “Garage Sale this Saturday & Sunday” for both days have it read “Garage Sale Today!” both days. It gives people the impression that it is a one-day sale and they won’t find leftovers on Sunday that didn’t sell Saturday. When placing an ad in the newspaper have the person taking down your information read back the address to you, making sure they print it correctly. You can also list your sale on many free local social sites in your community. But the most important type of marketing is just basic signage. Hang signs to point people on side streets in the right direction. Home Depot, Lowe’s and Fred Meyers have a large variety if you are not the crafty creative type.

CLEAN UP YOUR ACT: you’ll get more money for items that are clean and in original packaging. Buyers appreciate comparing original retail price tags, when possible, but price your stuff to move. The standard for a garage sale is 15%-20% of retail, but be realistic. Very few people would pay that percentage of a $300 pair of Kate Spade shoes so that item may be better taken to a resale rack (check our RESALE directory for a list of good consignment shops). On the other hand, if you find yourself trying to price some ugly hillbilly rinestone ”Mom Jeans” from the early 90’s you probably can’t go low enough and letting them RIP at the Goodwill is a better bet.

PLAY HOUSE: putting furniture out as close to the street as possible because it is the number one best seller at garage sales and people will “drive by” and shop your sale before stopping. Having your furniture out front will entice them to stop. Also arrange your furniture like you would in your house with end tables by couches and chairs tucked under dining room tables to give buyers an idea of how good it would look in their house.

BE CHILDISH: put children’s items close to the ground where they can see, and become attached, to them. Kids can’t beg their parents for toys or books they can’t see. So don’t pile them high on a tall table because they will never know what they are missing. Also place children’s items in the back of your garage sale so parents have a chance to shop without worrying about their kids being too close to the street.

HANG IT ALL OUT: clothing is tricky because some people have great success selling it at garage sales and others don’t. For your best luck hang-up clothing so customers can see quickly what size and gender it is. Few people have the patience to paw through a pile so hang them all up and clearly price them. Button and zip-up all your shirts, coats and pants so it’s clear that all the hardware is intact. Remember that people DO NOT have a right to try on clothing in your house. This is not Nordstrom and you should say no if they dare ask. The kind of people who would ask to go into your home to try on a $2 sweater are exactly the kind of people you do not want in there.

BE ELECTRIFYING: the burden of proof that items work falls on you, the seller. To prove your stuff works properly run an extension cord out of your home and into your garage sale for people to test items that need electricity. Even on sale, it is only a good deal if it works. Having a couple types of batteries on-hand also gives people the chance to check out electronic treasures.

SHUT UP: have lots of small bills and change so you don’t have to lower your prices just to break someone’s $50. and keep your cash on your body in an apron so no one walks off with the cash jar. Keep security in mind because these strangers may be very friendly but they are not your friends. Resist the temptation to be talkative because you may give out too much information that can make you vulnerable. For example, if you are selling a Playstation don’t let them know it is because you bought the new Playstaion 3 recently; you do not want to be a target for thieves. Also keep your profession private so your work schedule cannot be guessed. Obviously don’t tell them when you are going on vacation, tell them your guard dog’s name or disclose that you live alone. And finally, clearly mark where your garage sale ends so people don’t wonder back onto your private property. Shut gates or hang a sheet to clearly define where the sales ends and make sure to lock your back door.

Having a garage sale with a buddy or neighbor is even safer (and more fun) and a great way to cleanse your collection of unwanted things and make a little extra money to do something special…like go to seaside brunch with Mr. Perfect. Have fun and if remember if your garage is a rockin’, buyers will come a knockin’.

A couple years ago I did a story about on-line shopping and ordered gifts from every store imaginable. The goal was to see what company really made it easy, affordable and fun to buy presents from the comfort of your computer chair and what products really lived up to their on-line descriptions when they arrived. It was an enlightening assignment for KOIN and KATU television and I went from very rarely shopping on-line to becoming an expert on the subject. So, when I am looking for a last minute perfect and thoughtful gift that I can’t seem to find locally I turn on my laptop and get out my credit card. With Father’s Day coming this Sunday I wanted to pass along my favorite store, www.RedEnvelope.com in case you still need a gift. They have high-quality gifts for the golf lover, barbequer, or beer drinker in your life. They also have traditional and sentimental gifts like a pocket watch, or personalized cuff links. The prices are fair and you can get a really nice gift that he will love for around $50.00. Shipping and handling can run you another $15. but the package arrives perfect, when promised and already gift wrapped in a beautiful keepsake red box with their signature blue ribbon. They will even include a card with your personal message for no extra charge. I would highly recommend them for all occasions and for a limited time you can get a discount if you click on the microphone on the top of their site and put in the coupon code 5522. Hope that helps you celebrate the Father of your children or dear old Dad.

The Portland Waterfront Fashion Show will be a fun day of food and fashion at the lovely Thirst Wine Bar & Bistro on Sunday morning June 13th, 2010. The space overlooks the boats and bridges on the Willamette River in beautiful downtown Portland. Guests are in for a treat because my long time friend and boutique owner of Lily Atelier, Dawn Stanchfield, has hand-selected the models and outfits for the fashion show. The clothes I have bought from her over the years continue to be some of the favorites in my closet. Dawn has also styled me for many television shoots and we’ve worked together styling fashion layouts for various magazines. Her style is modern but classic with unique detailing and wonderful craftsmenship and her clothes will be for sale after the show. But, if accessories are more “your thing” make sure to stop by and see Ann Matthews with Silpada Designs, who will be on-hand to help you find a great piece of jewelry that comes with a lifetime guarantee! Jenn Hanston will be also be there with her Three Sixty Bags that are entirely designed and crafted in the good ol’ USA with designer grade upholstery fabric. The fun and flirty bags are made to last. Lots to see and buy this Sunday but you can even make some money. The Gold Exchange encourages you to bring any broken or old gold jewelry you don’t want and they will pay you cash on the spot. Don’t worry if it has stones in it, because they will gladly remove and return those to you. This event will be a fun day packed with talented fashionistas and will also offer a small brunch, with mimosas and a special featured wine. Tickets are $20. and doors open at 11am and event goes until 3pm, I’ll be the MC so make sure to say hello!

Who are you? Identify what kinds of products you consume and then go straight to those aisles, resisting the urge to cruise the whole store. If you eat fresh foods then you should shop the perimeter of the store where the fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy are kept. If you are on a diet then skip the cookie aisle. Out of sight, out of mind is a famous saying for a reason.

What’s for dinner? Plan your meals before you make your list so you don’t get distracted once at the store. Nothing is more frustrating than spending a hundred dollars at the register just to come home and try to make a meal out of brussels sprouts and enchilada sauce. Even if you don’t like making a list challenge yourself to write down what meals you plan on making.

What you looking at? Product placement is very important to stores and the items at eye level are there for a reason. Look up and down for better deals. Also realize the bigger the chain the bigger their research budget on how to get you
to buy. You can also make a list of what you are NOT buying, if you know your weaknesses.

Does size matter? Only buy in bulk for the products you’ll never stop using. Laundry detergent, toilet paper and shampoo are good choices for the bigger quantities that usually mean cheaper prices. However, you will never use a gallon of soy sauce and your vanilla extract is too big if it has a handle.

Are you a less is more person? Avocados at most big chain supermarkets are a dollar or more and to make guacamole you need to buy several of them since they are so small. Zupans Markets, and other organic stores, have HUGE avocados that are twice the price but three times the size so you end up needing fewer of them and therefore spending less money.

Over the past year in a half they have opened up for Tim McGraw, Josh Turner, Jake Owen, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean and Kenny Chesney (who also crowned them the “Next Big Star” when they won his talent show). So it was no surprise when Oregon’s most popular country singer and songwriting duo, Cloverdayle, was being courted by the heavy-hitters in Nashville. Chad and Rachel returned from their trip in March to announce that they had great meetings with Universal Music, Sony/BMG, Universal South, Big Machine/Valory, Capitol, Warner Bros, CAA and William Morris and a showcase was being planned. How exciting! The little band from the little town of West Lynn has created big buzz in the Northwest and we are all cheering them on. The showcase may be in Nashville later this month but their kick-off, wish them well, raise some money to cover expenses party is here! They are debuting a new song and also giving part of the money raised to help out the people in Nashville that were so severely devastated by the recent storm. Lead singer Rachel told me how they felt about the timing, “We are headed to Nashville in two weeks, to perform an industry showcase, which has been planned for quite some time. We were already scheduled to do a fundraiser concert at Bushwacker’s in Tualatin this Friday in order to raise some of the funds needed for the showcase. As you know, Nashville has been hit with some horrible flooding. People were killed, homes were destroyed and many were displaced without even basic necessities. In light of this disaster, we will be donating a percentage of whatever we raise to the Nashville Flood Relief Fund through the Red Cross.” Their songs are as big as their hearts with touching lyrics and soft melodies…well, some of their songs…but don’t let Cloverdayle’s good looks fool you (truly ridiculous how attractive these two are) because they can ROCK! It is time to buy your “I knew them when” shirt as the Rose City may lose its best country band to NashVegas. But don’t take my word for it, check out them out Friday night May 7th at Bushwackers, 8200 SW Tonka Street, Tualatin Oregon, 503-692-3982. For more information go to www.Cloverdayle.com.
